Malandrino (literally, ‘little criminal’) performs folk songs from the geographical area known as the ‘Mezzogiorno’, or ‘Land of the Noonday Sun’, encompassing Southern Italy, Sicily, and Sardinia. Malandrino specializes in performing songs from the underground and immigrant cultures of Southern Italy and Sicily, including songs of imprisonment, revenge ballads, immigration songs and ‘canto di malavita’ or ‘songs from a life of crime’. These songs tell the story of a culture that has often been voiceless in the face of poverty and alienation with simple but arresting melodies and heart-wrenching lyrics.
