Welterweight is the recording and performing project of singer/songwriter Doug Cowan. Cowan was born and bred in rural Maine and survived on K-Tel Hits until he discovered his brother’s record collection, which was dominated by Neil Young and Elvis Costello vinyl. Adopting the emerging DIY attitude growing in underground music, he took two guitar lessons, ignoring everything but three barr chords, and promptly started a punk band without a name. Cowan sharpened his lyrical style and jagged guitar chops in the 90’s as front man for Portland’s agit-guitar band Pluck Theatre, and later as “the guitarist on the right” for pop heroes Between Dreams. Then came an 11 year, four CD stint with Bullyclub…where the songs got a little slower, the vocals were mixed a little louder, and the amps got smaller. Bullyclub was voted one of the top rock bands in the Portland Phoenix Readers Music Poll and chosen to showcase at Boston ’s 2002 NEMO conference. The Welterweight lineup is rounded out by musicians who Cowan can con, I mean convince, to accompany him live or in studio. The result combines the Neil Young-inspired “crunch and croon” of bands like Wilco and Old 97s, with the lounge-ie rock lyricism of American Music Club and Richard Buckner.http://www.myspace.com/welterweightrock
