Carl Dimow Quartet
Featuring: Carl Dimow (flute, bass flute), David Newsam (guitar), John Hunter (bass), and Gary Gemmiti (drums)
Flutist, guitarist, and composer, Carl Dimow, is an eclectic and creative musician whose performances range from classical music to jazz, klezmer to blues, and from original music for theater and film to traditional folk music. His performances have been hailed as “mesmerizing”, “brilliant”, and “sublime”.
This quartet focuses on the jazz side of Carl’s musical expression, combined with some blues and funk, and exploring the beautiful possibilities of the flute and bass flute as lead instruments in jazz
John Hunter - bass – A seasoned performer with a beautiful sound, John has worked with many icons of jazz including Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Slide Hampton and Sheila Jordan, to name just a few.
Gary Gemmiti - percussion – Always in the groove and creative, Gary is one of just a handful of drummers in this area who are deeply rooted in the great jazz drumming tradition.
Carl’s regular guitarist, David Newsam, will be teaching at a guitar camp the week of this gig. He’s a big part of this quartet and will be missed. In a nice bit of jazz timing, however, an old friend of Carl’s, Mel Deal, will be in Portland visiting his brother and will be taking over the guitar chair this month.
Mel is a well known jazz guitarist from Nashville. In addition to playing jazz dates, he’s the on call guitarist for the Nashville Symphony and a number of other regional orchestras. Because of his versatility, he has also performed with many pop and country music stars. Jazz artists with whom he has performed include: Ricky Woodard, Gatemouth Brown, Groove Holmes, Gene Bertoncini, Jack Wilkins, Mark Feldman, Paul McCandless, and Mundell Lowe.
Mel was a close friend and student of the late jazz guitar great Jimmy Raney, and is one of the foremost authorities on Raney's music and style.
