Jeff Aumuller and the Potato Pickers
Friday - December, 21 @ 6:00pm
Singer, songwriter, guitarist, and banjo player, Jeff Aumuller is a popular performer at music venues in Maine, both as a solo artist and also with his backup ensemble, the Potato Pickers. A Jeff Aumuller show is like a Whitman’s Sampler of musical styles, and on any given night, an audience is as likely to hear a Willie Nelson cover as a jazzy Harold Arlen/Johnny Mercer gem from the 1930s or a bluegrass classic or a traditional folk song or any one of Jeff’s own original songs. Living for decades on his sailboat, a circa 1937 Collin-Archer gaff-rigged cutter, Jeff leans toward themes of a life spent mostly on the water, the lives and loves and the limbo of dividing hours spent on board or on land. His recently released album, Men In Ships Rot in Port, has that salty flavor in spades. Lately Jeff and the Potato Pickers have been mining the American Songbook pages for old favorites such as “Ac-Cen-Tchu-Ate The Positive,” “Over the Rainbow,” “It’s A Wonderful World,” “When The Blue of the Night (Meets The Gold of the Day),” and “Don’t Blame Me.” Busy schedules can sometimes lead to last minute substitutions, but when all are present and accounted for, the featured Potato Pickers showcases the fiddling of Meagan McIntyre and Sarah Morneau and the rhythm section of Carlos Cuellar on guitar, Teg Glendon on bass, and Tom Morse on mandolin. Regular gigs for Aumuller and crew include appearances at Andy’s Old Port Pub, Blue, and Flatbread Pizza in Portland, The Snow Squall Restaurant in South Portland, and Lenny’s in Westbrook.
