Weird Turn Pro

Saturday - January, 01 @ 8:00pm

"It’s reminiscent of Eno, and Amnesiac-era Radiohead, and the opening credits to a slow-burn art-house horror movie that somebody needs to make." - Joe Sweeney, The Bollard
Weird Turn Pro is a music group. Their name is a nod to Hunter S. Thompson who, among many things, saw the value in both chaos and process. Those two forces are alternately employed by or yielded to by WTP as they create music that is both like water eroding granite over the millennia or the momentary flicker of an open flame. Leaning heavily on improvisation, compositions not only afford opportunities for each member of the ensemble to improvise freely, but require the ensemble to constantly shift and re-interpret the when, how, and why of melody and form. Band leader / composer, Mike Effenberger, organizes sound in a uniquely personal way; informed by classical and jazz traditions yet staking a claim in the world of modern minimalism. Their debut record, "The Repeatedly Answered Question," has been hailed as "a free jazz psalm" and "refined minimalism with no-vault improvisation."

" This sextet really floats my boat how they enter into a seriously captivating melodic drone.  It’s like staring at warped sunlight rippling at the bottom of a blue pool.  It’s comforting as hell." - Dave Sumner, Bird is the Worm
